About Orthodontic Care
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
A dentist focuses on overall oral health, including cleanings, fillings, and preventive care. An orthodontist completes two to three additional years of specialized training focused specifically on aligning teeth, correcting bites, and guiding jaw development. All three of our doctors are board-certified orthodontists, not general dentists offering braces on the side.
At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first visit by age seven. Most children will not need treatment that early, but an evaluation lets us catch concerns at the ideal time. Learn more about early treatment.
How much does orthodontic treatment cost?
Treatment depends on your case, but it starts as low as $1,880 for limited care and ranges up to $8,840 for comprehensive treatment, with Diamond+ Invisalign starting as low as $4,880. We offer interest-free financing and monthly payments as low as $180. See our financing and insurance page.
During Treatment
Do braces or aligners hurt?
You may feel mild soreness for a few days after braces are placed or adjusted, or when you switch to a new aligner. It is temporary and eases with soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief. For more, see our caring for braces guide.
Do you see patients for emergencies?
Yes. Orthodontic issues like broken brackets, poking wires, or appliance problems can happen. Most can be eased at home until we see you. See our orthodontic emergency care page for step-by-step help, and call our office.
Can I schedule appointments after school or later in the day?
We do our best to offer flexible scheduling, including after-school and later appointments when available. Ask our team about times that fit your family’s schedule.
Do I need antibiotics before my appointment?
Most patients do not need antibiotics before orthodontic visits. If you have a specific medical condition that requires premedication, let us know and we will coordinate with your physician.
Results and Special Situations
Why do teeth shift after braces or aligners?
Teeth naturally want to move throughout life. Wearing your retainer as instructed after treatment is the only reliable way to keep your results.
Do you accept patients transferring from another orthodontist?
Yes. Patients who move to the area or wish to continue treatment with us are welcome. We will review your records and pick up where your previous orthodontist left off.
How can allergies, mouth breathing, or tongue posture affect treatment?
Chronic allergies or enlarged adenoids can contribute to mouth breathing, which may influence jaw growth and tooth position. Improper tongue posture or tongue thrusting can also place pressure on the teeth. We evaluate these factors as part of our airway-focused orthodontics.
Will orthodontic treatment change my facial appearance?
Orthodontic treatment primarily aligns the teeth and bite, but it can also subtly enhance facial balance and profile, especially when jaw development is involved.
Can braces help or worsen TMJ issues?
Orthodontic treatment is not typically a direct cause of TMJ disorders. In some cases, correcting a misaligned bite can relieve strain. We will evaluate your bite and explain what treatment can do for your symptoms.
