Your Lifelong Commitment to a Stunning Smile
Embracing the responsibilities associated with your orthodontic treatment ensures the longevity of your results. Here’s what you need to know about retainers:
Removable Retainers
After your braces are removed, you’ll receive retainers to maintain the alignment of your teeth. As the bone and surrounding tissues adapt post-treatment, wearing your retainers as prescribed is critical. Neglecting this can lead to teeth shifting back, potentially requiring further treatment.
Hawley Retainer
Traditional retainer and made of acrylic and stainless steel wires.
Clear Retainer
Made of clear plastic and looks like a clear aligner, such as Invisalign®.
Retainer Protocol
Teeth have a natural tendency to shift over time, so we advocate for indefinite retainer use post-orthodontic treatment. Initially, wear your retainers full-time for a year after your braces are off. You can transition to nighttime-only wear after this phase, which helps accommodate the growth of wisdom teeth and preserve your smile. Dr. Ehsani and Dr. Sabet will schedule follow-ups every six to nine months to monitor your progress and recommend wisdom tooth management based on periodic X-rays.
Once a course of action for your wisdom teeth is established, we recommend weekly retainer use during sleep to counteract the natural tightening of facial muscles and potential tooth movement with age.
Caring for Your Retainers
Retainers are crafted from thermoplastic material, which is vulnerable to high heat, so keep them clear of hot environments. When not in use, store them in their designated case to avoid loss or damage.
Pets can find retainers intriguing, so ensure they’re out of reach. Clean your retainers before and after use with a soft toothbrush and mild soap; denture cleaners can also be effective. Always rinse thoroughly post-cleaning.
Despite durable construction, retainers need replacing over time. Your treatment includes the first set; however, charges apply for replacements due to loss or damage. Report any fit issues to us promptly.
Fixed Retainers
A bonded wire retainer should be a permanent fixture. Only remove it if dental professionals identify hygiene-related issues. In such instances, switch to a removable retainer as directed by Dr. Ehsani. Regular dental visits are crucial for the health and longevity of your fixed retainer.
Situations Necessitating Stronger Retention
Certain habits or anatomical conditions might necessitate more robust retention strategies, including:
- Mouth breathing
- Teeth grinding or clenching
- Atypical tongue movements or positions
- Playing reed instruments
- Oral habits like lip sucking or pen chewing
- Pre-treatment gaps or severe tooth rotations
- Your Role in Maintenance
To ensure your smile remains vibrant and healthy, adhere to these guidelines and maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings. Your dedication is key to the enduring success of your orthodontic treatment.
